The Plastic Surgery Center Internationale, which provides state-of-the-art innovations in the field of cosmetic plastic surgery & age management, offers neck lifts to patients who desire a fresh look.

If the effects of aging have robbed you of the long, lean neck of your youth, then consider having a neck lift. A neck lift is a surgical procedure used to rejuvenate and enhance the appearance and shape of the neck which has been affected by aging or congenital deformities. Since all people are not the same, a single surgical neck lift procedure is not the right choice for everyone. Dr. Giampapa and Dr. Mesa, specialists in neck rejuvenation and enhancement, have published a systematic approach to evaluate the neck that allows surgeons to choose the appropriate neck lift procedure that will give the patient the desired result (Giampapa and Mesa. Neck Rejuvenation With Suture Suspension Platysmaplasty Technique: A Minimally Invasive Neck Lift Technique That Addresses All Patients’ Anatomic Needs, Clinics in Plastic Surgery, January  2014).

Plastic Surgery Center Internationale performs the following types of neck lifts:

Who Is a Suitable Candidate for Neck Lift in New York City and New Jersey?

While it is impossible to tell you definitively whether a neck lift is the right solution for your concerns, here are some general questions that suggest you may be a suitable candidate for a neck lift:

  • Is your facial skin and tissue healthy?
  • Are you realistic about your expectations for the outcome of the neck lift procedure?
  • Are you in reasonably good physical and psychological health?

If you honestly answered “yes” to these questions, then the next step is to schedule a consultation with either Dr. Giampapa or Dr. Mesa. During this appointment, you and the doctor will review your medical history, address any current medical concerns, and explore different options you have to achieve your goals for aesthetic surgery.

Rejuvenation of the neck involves the careful evaluation of six key anatomic points:

  1. Cervicomental angle depth
  2. Mandibular border definition
  3. Mandibular angle definition
  4. Labiomandibular fold prominence (jowling)
  5. Chin prominence
  6. Neck width

By carefully assessing each of these points during the consultation, the aesthetic surgeon can choose the neck lift procedure that will give the patient the best aesthetic result desired.

If both you and the physician decide a neck lift is the best choice for you, expect to receive instructions about how to prepare for surgery, as well as information about local anesthesia, sedation, pain control options, and post-surgical care.

If you are ready to find out if a neck lift is the best solution for you, call the Plastic Surgery Center Internationale at 973-552-4104 today to schedule your consultation.

Local Anesthesia for Neck Lifts in New York City and New Jersey

The clinical research work of our board-certified aesthetic surgeon Dr. John Mesa has demonstrated that many patients can undergo aesthetic cosmetic surgery, such as neck lifts, under local anesthesia with minimal discomfort and no pain without the use of general anesthesia or IV (intravenous) sedation. These findings were presented and published at the World Congress of the International Confederation of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery meeting (IPRAS) in Chile in February 2013; and the prestigious American Association of Plastic Surgeons Annual Meeting in New Orleans in April 2013.

This novel approach of performing neck lift surgery under “pure” local anesthesia with minimal discomfort and no pain allows the patient to have a faster recovery and decreased down time.

What to Expect Before, During, and After a Neck Lift in New York City and New Jersey

Before Your Neck Lift

Some of the ways you’ll be asked to prepare for your neck lift include the following:

  • If you are a smoker, you’ll need to refrain from tobacco use several weeks prior to the procedure.
  • Stop taking aspirin, NSAIDS, and other medications or supplements that have the potential to increase your risk of heavy bleeding.

The Day of Your Surgery

On the day of your neck lift, the following will occur:

  • The surgical team will prep you for surgery and answer any of your last-minute questions.
  • You’ll receive anesthesia for your comfort during the procedure.
  • Once the anesthesia takes effect, your neck lift surgery begins. The first step of the procedure involves the doctor making a small incision under your chin and behind your ear so he can pull the neck muscles tight. He then sculpts the tissues in the neck and excises any excess fat and skin. The final step of the surgery is closing the incisions with sutures or surgical tape and applying dressings and bandages. You will then be transferred to the recovery area for observation as the effects of the sedative wear off.

Your Recovery

After you have recovered from most of the sedation, and the doctor approves your departure, you’ll be able to go home. As part of your aftercare plan, you may be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection and pain control medicine. Most people find they need the pain medicine for only about 48 hours and then they can manage any minor discomfort with over-the-counter treatments. You‘ll need to wear a compression bandage around your neck to reduce swelling.

The doctor will remove your stitches about a week after surgery, and most patients report they are able to return to work at this time. The majority of the swelling and bruising disappears within a month. During the next few months, you will see the full effects of your neck lift surgery.
